It has become commonplace for books to be adapted to movies and television shows. With the popularity of this phenomenon growing at a thunderous rate, reading the book before the adaptation releases has become necessary. While many readers compare the printed and Hollywood formats, as well as the actors chosen to play their favorite characters, I try to judge them own their own merits. Today I'm showcasing a few of the hit book-to-television adaptations that have a growing viewership and, more importantly, have spawned an interest in reading for many.
First is the adaptation of the epic fantasy, Game of Thrones, written by none other than New York Times best-selling author George R.R. Martin. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series airs on HBO and tells the story of seven noble families that are fighting for control of the mythical land of Westeros.
Recommended to readers that enjoy historical fiction, fantasy, drama and action-packed adventures with a fair amount of deception amongst the families.

The latest adaptation is quite a thriller. NBC has centered its latest creation, Hannibal, around the characters and elements of Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon. Currently the show focuses a great deal on the connection between Will Graham, an FBI special investigator, and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist.

Each book in the thirteen book series is a complete story and can be enjoyed as a standalone mystery. I recommend reading the entire series to fully enjoy the plot.
